Admission Requirements

  • A cumulative grade-point average of (2.5) is required of students transferring to MU. A cumulative grade-point average of (2.0) is required of students returning to MU.
  • You previously must have earned 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university* OR have earned an associate degree (AA) from a regionally accredited Missouri institution.
  • Your AA degree or 60 hours of prior course work MUST include a 3-hour course in both college algebra AND English expository writing with grades of C– or higher. These two courses must be the equivalent of what one would take at MU when taking college algebra (Math 1100 or 1120) or English Exposition and Argumentation (English 1000).

Note: No matter how many credit hours you have earned prior to entering the BGS degree program (whether you are a new transfer to MU or a re–enrollment) you will still need to earn a minimum of 30 credit hours from MU toward the BGS degree.

*To check whether your previous institution(s) is “regionally accredited,” please check the following web site: http://www.chea.org/search/default.asp

If you are not sure if you meet these requirements or if you need clarification before applying, please contact Ehren Oncken with the Center for Distance and Independent Study at 1-800-609-3727 or
e-mail him at OnckenE@missouri.edu. If you meet these requirements, click here for Admission Procedures.

Tools to help you meet admission requirements:

The Registrar offers a GPA Calculator to help you estimate how many hours of A or B grades you would need to raise your cumulative GPA to meet the admission standard. The GPA calculator can be accessed at: GPA Calculator

If you have previously enrolled in MU courses, you may be eligible for two of the University’s programs:

Next steps if you DO NOT meet these requirements. If you previously have not earned 60 transferable credit hours, you may enroll in individual courses from any regionally accredited institution (including MU CDIS) as a non-degree student until you have earned 60 transferable hours.

If you do not have the cumulative grade-point average required, you must enroll as a non-degree student (at MU CDIS or elsewhere) and earn grades high enough to raise your cumulative GPA to that required. At that point, you may apply to MU to be a degree-seeking student, and your non-degree MU courses will apply toward your bachelor of general studies degree completion program.

It is important to remember that you DO have options for going back to school even if you don't meet the MU admission requirements on your first try. A good resource for advice about the best way to raise your cumulative GPA would be an adviser at your old college or university.
