From the AP Psychology instructor:

My name is Rachel Proffitt, and I am the instructor for the fall and spring semesters of AP Psychology at MU High School. Note that completing the fall semester is a prerequisite for the spring semester.

Unlike other courses you may have taken at MU High School, an AP online course is designed so that you can interact directly with your teacher and classmates. You can contact me at any time via e-mail and meet with your classmates in regularly scheduled chat-room sessions where you will participate in a discussion about psychology.

Another unique feature about this online course is that it follows a semester schedule, with specific starting and ending dates, as well as pre-determined dates for submitting progress evaluations and exams. You will still, of course, maintain control of your own study time. Due dates, however, are imposed to ensure that you and the others enrolled in the course keep up with the rigorous pace demanded by an Advanced Placement course.

If you are not familiar with the concept of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, be aware that they offer the student the opportunity to take an exam administered by the College Board that may be accepted (depending upon the score you receive) by many colleges and universities across the nation as credit for their equivalent course. For this reason, AP courses are challenging in terms of both content and intensity. In other words, you should expect to make the kind of commitment you would make for a freshman-level college psychology course.

Note that enrolling in the fall and spring semesters of AP Psychology does not require you to take the AP exam, and these courses are not directly affiliated with the College Board. Also note that your score on the AP exam (should you choose to take the exam) will in no way affect your final grade for these courses. Should you choose to participate in the AP exam, however, taking these courses should give you a definite advantage. If you choose to take the AP exam, you will need to make your own arrangements. You can contact the College Board for assistance in locating a testing site (usually a local high school).

If you are unsure whether AP Psychology would be a good fit for you, consider the following questions:

If you answered "yes" to more than a few of the above questions, AP Psychology would very likely be a great choice for your class schedule.

Because each course will be a closed classroom, with the same students working through the course together, space is limited. For enrollment periods, starting and ending dates, and more specific information, please see the course descriptions in the online catalog. Also, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like additional information. I look forward to working closely with every student in these courses. I hope you will join us!
