Description: This course investigates the nature of modern science fiction, looking briefly at the historical development of the genre but concentrating on recurring narrative patterns and themes. Students will read five novels and one book of critical theory about the genre of science fiction in order to examine some of the most important themes and some of the strategies science fiction writers use in constructing plausible and engaging alternative worlds.
