Course Information

Units:

One Half Unit equals one high school semester credit. Some courses include both a first and a second half unit, and they are designated accordingly in the course description. Other courses are designated as one half unit courses. Next to the course title line on your application form, check the box designated "1st" for all high school courses, unless you are enrolling in the second half unit of the course.

Prerequisites:

Some high school courses have prerequisites, which are listed in the course description. Courses designated second half unit require credit in the first half unit (earned either through independent study or in the high school classroom). Most courses designated as one half unit have no prerequisites.

Grades:

The A, B, C, D, F system of grading is used by the Center for most independent study courses. See the Course Overview in your study guide for the grading scale and point ranges for your course.

Upon completion of the course, you will receive a grade report, which will give the final exam score (if applicable) and a letter grade, based on the number of points earned in the course.

Transcripts:

The University of Missouri High School will not release final grades or award credit until all accounts are paid in full.

When you have completed a course, we will send you a notice of your final exam grade and your course grade. A short time later, we will send your high school a transcript. If you want us to send your transcript to other places, please provide us with a written request.

Diploma Program:

MU High School offers an online diploma—you can take all the courses you need to complete a diploma online.

Gifted Courses:

The Center for Distance and Independent Study offers several more challenging distance learning courses designed for academically talented high school students.

Advanced Placement:

Advanced Placement courses are designed so that you can work directly with your teacher and your classmates. You will meet in regularly scheduled chat rooms where you will participate in classroom discussion.

University Courses:

Students who have completed the eleventh grade and are in the top fourth of their class may enroll in entry-level university courses.

Check course descriptions to be certain that the course will meet your educational needs; all prerequisites must be fulfilled before you enroll. Your high school principal should indicate approval by signing your application. University fees and regulations apply to university courses taken by high school students. Enrollment in a Center for Distance and Independent Study course does not constitute admission to the University of Missouri.

Group Enrollments:

Many high school counselors arrange for group enrollments in independent study so that students can enroll in courses not offered at their schools. Students in the group meet for regularly scheduled sessions under the supervision of a faculty member at the school. Course materials are provided by the Center for Distance and Independent Study, and the completed assignments are returned to the Center for evaluation. Please contact the Center for more information on group enrollments.
