Is independent study right for me?

  • Will independent study suit my learning style?

Because you choose when and where to work on your independent study course, you need to be both self-motivated and goal-oriented. Much of the instruction in an independent study course happens by reading, so successful independent learners don't mind working alone. But you won't be entirely on your own. All courses include step-by-step instructions, and the Center's staff is available to answer questions and offer study suggestions.

  • Do I have the time necessary to devote to study?

You have maximum flexibility in your study time. You have nine months from your date of enrollment to complete your independent study course.

  • What are course lessons like?

Course lessons generally include: reading assignments, commentary from the course author, self-checking exercises, and graded progress evaluations. You can preview any of our courses online.

  • What are progress evaluations?

Progress evaluations may be multiple-choice, essays, or other types of projects or performance tasks. They are submitted by mail, fax, e-mail, or file upload to the Center for scoring, and you receive feedback on your work. One purpose of the progress evaluations is to help you prepare for any exams in the course.

  • What are exams like?

Not all courses have exams, but most do. Like the progress evaluations, exams may be multiple-choice, essay, or other performance tasks. Unlike the progress evaluations, exams are proctored, and you will need to arrange an exam proctor as explained in the Guidelines.

  • What hardware/software do I need?

Courses may require the use of a Web browser, e-mail, word processor, media player, or other commonly available software. Check the course description for specific course requirements.
